The IPL Returns tonight, promising to be bigger and better than ever

April 3, 2013 by Tejmgas

Well, here we are again.

Tonight’s blockbuster match between defending champions Kolkata Night Riders and last years table-toppers Delhi Daredevils will ignite another season of the richest T20 tournament of the modern era. Despite controversies that have surrounded the competition in the past, I for one am just looking forward to watching some high-quality matches in cricket’s most exciting format.

The one thing I have always loved about the IPL is the way it brings players from all over the globe together. In no other tournament can you see the likes of Dale Steyn facing up against Virender Sehwag, with David Warner waiting at the other end and Kumar Sangakarra behind the stumps. Then there are of course the individual rivalries. One of my favourite moments from last year’s IPL was watching Albie Morkel slog his brother Morne  and the clear banter that was present there.

Now of course there is the big question, which team will come out on top?

The Chennai Super Kings are the most successful team in the competition and led by captain MS Dhoni have used their strong core of Indian players to good effect. You would be a fool to be against them winning it this year. Then there are today’s competitors, the Daredevils and Knight Riders. Along with the Mumbai Indians they boast the most all-rounded teams on paper, could it be their year?

Those are my four favourites for this year’s tournament but if this competition has taught us anything it is to expect the unexpected. It could be that one standout player who makes all the difference and leads his team to glory. The likes of Chris Gayle and Adam Gilchrist find themselves on weaker teams but can win the tournaments themselves.

Let me know what you think in the comments below, who are you backing to go all the way?
