A Look Ahead: World T20 Final, Sri Lanka vs West Indies

October 7, 2012 by Tejmgas

Before I start, let me congratulate the West Indies team on their crushing victory over Australia and proving me completely wrong. Thanks for that……..

Anyway, back to today’s match.

Weeks of drama, tension and thrilling cricket has led to this, the final between Sri Lanka and West Indies. Sri Lanka will go into the match favourites but West Indies have shown us they are capable of a giant-killing. Once again, there will be battles within the match we will need to look out for.

Gayle vs Malinga

This is the big one, the world’s best T20 batsman vs the world’s best T20 bowler. The stakes could never be higher. After Australia’s crushing defeat, captain George Bailey said ‘if Sri Lanka can get Gayle out for less than 20 runs, they are favourites to win the title but if they can’t then West Indies are too strong.’ Well, if there is any bowler in the world that can get Gayle out, it is Malinga. It will be a fascinating battle.

Spin vs Spin

Both teams boast very good spin attacks that are capable of turning the match on its head. However, both teams also have batsmen who are very good against spin (Jayawardene being one example). It will be the case of who is on form today.

West Indies vs The Home Crowd

In these situations, home advantage can be key. The West Indies will have to counter the loud Lankan crowd as well as the skill of their players. On the other hand, the Lankans will be cheered on by their home crowd and that can only do wonders for their confidence.

I think that today will be a very close game but I think Sri Lanka have the edge thanks to that home advantage.

Let me know what you think
